We’ll share expert tips on how to select flowers, colours, suitable bouquet arrangements, and gifts that reflect the recipient’s taste and personality. with personal touches and meaningful gestures that make your gift truly memorable.

The Unique Benefits of Flowers

Multiple studies have found that flowers have an incredible mood-boosting effect on people. They reduce feelings of anxiety and usher in a sense of calm, compassion, and even kindness.

The amazing thing the study found is that it took less than one week for these effects to be felt and their impact lasted for almost an entire day. Participants shared that they felt more energetic at work after having flowers in their homes. Imagine if they had flowers both at home and at the office! They would permanently be on cloud nine!

The fantastic thing about birthday flowers is that not only are they delightful gifts, but they also decorate living and work spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Choosing the Perfect Birthday Flowers

So, how do you pick the perfect happy birthday flowers for your loved ones? Here are a few tips and ideas for you.

Consider their birth month

A great way to personalise birthday flowers for your loved one is to buy the flower associated with the month they were born. What is the origin of birth month flowers you ask? It is simply the month during which a flower starts to bloom in the Northern Hemisphere.

The month of June, for example, is represented by the elegant rose. Therefore, a beautiful bouquet of roses would be a thoughtful gift for a June baby. They will feel seen, known, and loved. Flowers Across Melbourne has a beautiful array of bouquets available in a wide spectrum of colours, from mauve, orange, and pink to yellow, white, and, of course, the classic red

What is their favourite colour?

One of the fun parts of gifting flowers is all the amazing colours in which they come. Traditionally, flower colours have been considered to hold special meanings, such as red symbolising love and passion, yellow representing friendship, and white associated with purity and honesty.

However, these days, most people just buy the colours they like and don’t place much emphasis on the meaning. There’s no denying, though, the influence that flower colours can have on our emotions. Pastel arrangements, such as the Florist Choice Pastel Box or the Little Garden Blooms carry a sense of tranquillity and relaxation, while the vibrant Summer Morning Bouquet and the Sweet Sangria are uplifting.

If you know your loved one’s favourite colour, then it’s easy to decide on the bouquet colour that they will enjoy the most. But, if you’re not sure, you may need to go on a bit of a covert investigative mission to find out.

Think about the birthday setting

It’s a different matter though if the flowers are for a birthday party! For this occasion, the larger and more celebratory the bouquet the better. This means blooms with festive colours, volume, and even some fun texture will work great.

Something like the Plush bouquet fits the bill well. The vivid yellow, orange, and red roses in the arrangement will add a fun splash of colour to any birthday celebration. And what’s really cool about this bouquet is that even after the party is over, it will continue to delight as the lilies start to open!

But if you’re not sure what bouquet to get or there’s a party theme that you want the flowers to match, go for any of the Florist Choice bouquets, such as the Florist Choice Pink Mini Box or the Florist Choice Vase. With these options, expert florists at Flowers Across Melbourne will help to put together a beautiful arrangement according to the theme in question.

Is seasonal availability a factor?

As we head into winter, the types, varieties, and even colours of flowers start to change. Sunflowers and irises, for instance, may be harder to find as they bloom in summer. Therefore, when choosing the perfect happy birthday flowers, seasonal availability is a key thing to keep in mind.

There are, however, flowers that bloom all year round, such as carnations, chrysanthemums, disbuds, roses, and many others. Therefore, you can’t go wrong if you include them in your birthday bouquet.

Take into account allergies and sensitivities

And of course, allergies can be a problem when it comes to flowers. If you can, try to find out beforehand whether your loved one is allergic to a particular flower. But if that’s not possible, you can stick to hypoallergenic blooms such as roses, tulips, orchids, irises, and many others.

Creating the Perfect Birthday Flower Arrangement

So now, you’ve decided on the flowers you want to get for your loved one, but you’re still not sure how to arrange or present them. Let’s take a look at some great options below.

Wearable Arrangements

You can have fun with your arrangements! Instead of a conventional bouquet, how about gifting your loved one something they can wear? How awesome would that be? Also, that way, the arrangement will be on full display all day long, moving from room to room for everyone to admire. Talk about getting your money’s worth! Below are a few cool ideas for wearable arrangements:

Flower Crown

This is super easy to make. All you need is some pliable twine, also known as vine wire, scissors, craft wire and/or floral tape, and of course your preferred blooms. You can combine large statement flowers like spray roses, lilies, or carnations with filler flowers like statice, baby’s breath, or asters, and include touches of greenery such as eucalyptus, lemon leaf, and/or myrtle.

To start, measure the vine wire to fit comfortably on your head, leaving maybe half an inch of extra space so that it’s not too tight. Make a mark on the wire and cut off the remainder of the wire with the scissors. Next, shape the wire into a circle and tape the ends together using the floral tape. Now the decorating begins!

Start by wrapping the greenery around the wine wire and use either the craft wire or floral tape to keep the greenery in place. Next, assemble small bunches of the statement flowers and filler flowers together on the side and when you’re happy with the way it looks add the bunch to the flower crown and fix it in place with either the floral tape or craft wire. Continue adding bunches all around the flower crown until you’re happy with how it looks and you’re done! Feel free to be as creative as you like with the length of the flower stems. And if you need to store the crown overnight, place it in the fridge to keep it looking fresh the next day.

Flower Garland

Another unique and exciting way to present happy birthday flowers is in the form of a neck garland! This will be even more fitting if the party has a tropical theme. Making a garland may seem daunting, but it’s actually very easy. All you need is your favourite large flower – carnations are the most common, but you can also use roses, marigolds, or even chrysanthemums. You will also need a braided fibre fishing line, a long needle – sometimes referred to as a hemline doll needle – and a button.

Start by chopping off the flower stems right at the base so that only the bloom remains. Next, cut a metre off of the fishing line and put it through the needle so that both ends of the line are even on the other end. Then, thread one end of the fishing line through the button and tie the ends of the fishing line together. As a result, we’ll have the needle on one end of the fishing line and the button on the other end. The button will act as a stopper when you start threading the fishing line through the flowers.

Next, comes the fun part. Pierce the bottom of one of the flowers with the needle and pull the thread all the way through to the end. The button will stop the fishing line from being pulled out. Pierce another flower and pull it all the way through. Keep on adding flowers until you’re happy and you’re done. You can mix different colours of flowers together or add blocks of single colours at a time, the choice is yours.

Traditional Floral Arrangements

If you prefer to keep things simple, you can opt for more traditional means of presenting your birthday flowers. If that’s the case, here are just a few things to consider:

Choosing the Right Container for Your Birthday Flowers

The container in which birthday flowers come in can at times be as interesting as the flowers themselves. Most flowers are delivered as bouquets in wrapped tissue paper, but at Flowers Across Melbourne you have the option of ordering your flowers to be displayed in a decorated box, bouquet, or vase.

The vases, in particular, come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. The gorgeous Cat’s Meow bouquet for instance is sold in a long, elegant glass vase, while the Splice arrangement is displayed in an artsy ceramic vase.

For the most flexibility in choosing the container for your flowers, however, go for the create your own bouquet option. With this choice, you also get to pick three different kinds of flowers to include in the arrangement, the overall colour palette, whether to add foliage, and the total value of your order.

Flower Arrangement Styles

Have you ever seen a flower bouquet and blurted out “wow” without even realising it? That’s the effect of a well-arranged flower display. A lot goes into a bouquet display, from selecting the right varieties, colours, and lengths of flowers to the size of the foliage and filler flowers.

When ordering birthday flowers, think about whether you want a loose arrangement style, such as the Arctic Belle, a compact style like the Genteel Gestures and Rose Bowl, or a single flower arrangement like the majestic orchids. You may also want to pull out all the steps and order an attention-grabbing centrepiece, such as the tulip-based Amsterdam, the show-stopping Raison D’être, or the perfectly named Centre of Attention. You can find a wide range of more sensational centrepieces here for any occasion.

An outstanding example of a well-styled arrangement is the breathtaking Resplendent Rainforest bouquet. The striking red anthuriums at the front of the display beautifully compliments the purple orchid vandas, while the light green lily buds and the darker green tropical foliage add visually appealing depth, volume, and character.

Incorporating Personal Touches

Including a handwritten note or card is always a lovely gesture when sending a loved one flowers. But most of us worry about the wastefulness of sending a card that would most likely head to a landfill after being read. However, Flowers Across Melbourne not only eliminates this worry with their handmade cards made from 100% recycled seed paper, but they go a step further in that the card can be planted to grow native Swan River Daisies! How amazing is that!

So feel free to purchase the Groovy Birthday plantable card completely guilt-free, knowing that you’re actually supporting the planting of native species while celebrating your loved one. Be sure to tell them to plant the card and not throw it away.

Balloons are another fun personal touch to include with the bouquet. All of the balloons from Flowers Across Melbourne arrive already inflated with helium and so are ready to bring in the festive fun right upon delivery.

Tips for Caring for Birthday Flowers

What do you do if you have received a beautiful bouquet of birthday flowers and want to make sure they last as long as possible? We have some great tips on how you can make that happen.

Ensure Freshness Flowers

The freshness of flowers is the first thing that enables them to last long. The good thing about Flowers Across Melbourne is that we only send the freshest blooms for delivery and in some cases, such as lilies, the flowers are delivered in bud form so that they last longer.

Ways to Extend the Lifespan of Cut Flowers

Once you’ve received the flowers, there are a few quick and easy ways to ensure that they stay fresh for longer.

Trim the stems:

Take the blooms out of the wrapping paper and prepare a basin of slightly warm water. Next, trim a half to one inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This will reduce the possibility of air pockets forming and will also help the flowers to start absorbing water immediately.

Remove lower leaves from stems:

Before placing your flowers in the water, remove the lower leaves from the stems so that they don’t fall below the water line as the leaves will rot quickly in water and contaminate it with bacteria.

Place flowers in cool water:

Next, wash a vase, jar, or other container of your choice, making sure that all the soap residue is completely rinsed out as soap can reduce the flowers’ lifespan. Once well rinsed, fill the vase halfway to three-quarters with room temperature or slightly colder water and put in the flowers.

Add supplements:

Some people like to use flower food to extend the lifespan of their blooms. You can buy this at any flower shop, or if you want to make your own, a common recipe is to mix two tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice and a single tablespoon of sugar and pour it into the vase water.

Change the vase water regularly: It is recommended to change the vase water and clean the vase about every 2 to 3 days. If your schedule is tight and you need to keep the water fresher for a little longer, you can add a quarter teaspoon (not tablespoon) of bleach to it. But this shouldn’t be the go-to. Changing the water is always the better option. Each time after replacing the water, cut a half-inch off the stems and you can also add the flower food.

Avoid direct sunlight: To prevent your flowers from wilting or browning quickly, place them out of direct sunlight.

Remove wilted flowers and leaves: Wilting flowers and leaves will fall in the water when they drop, causing bacterial growth and impacting the lifespan of the flowers. To prevent that from happening, it’s best to pluck them off early.

Conclusion

Birthdays are a wonderful time of friends, family, and fun, and a thoughtful birthday gift will always make the celebrations all the more special. Beautifully styled birthday flowers that are tailored to your loved one’s preference and personality, and perhaps supplemented with a handwritten card, balloons, or a delicious snack, are a wonderful way of letting them know how much they mean to you.
