Preempting Stupid – Why to Buy Flowers Before You Look Like an Idiot

First of all, if you’ve landed on this page looking for how to make up for something silly you’ve done recently, it’s already too late, visit our i’m sorry section and send something now, like, right now! And then book dinner – then come back here and see how a flower delivery and some good timing can prevent you from getting into this situation in the first place.

Back? Good, let’s go:

In the world of love and romance, it’s no secret that men seem to have it rougher than the fairer of the species, what with Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, dinner parties— forgetting important dates seems to be a male specialty, even with the advent of technology such as wunderlist (I love you wunderlist), online calendars and reminder apps.

Females don’t get off so lightly either (if you’ve ever stammered to find diplomatic words that aren’t ‘yes’ when asked ‘does this makes me look fat?’ whilst shopping with girlfriends, you’ll know what I mean). You danced around the issue as best you could, but in that moment it took to pull the right words from a brain that checked out 4 changing rooms ago, they totally knew what you were thinking.

She Likes Surprises

So, what to do if you’re one of those people who always forgets dates or says the wrong thing at the wrong time?

Send flowers unexpectedly at random intervals. This will make it much harder for them to call you out when you inevitably forget an important date again or let your mouth open before thinking. In fact, according to a study by the Society of American Florists, 74% of women said they prefer flowers for no special reason at all and 41% said that sending flowers unexpectedly is a great way to add romance to the relationship. That’s just science! (well, statistics)

Think Of It Like Banking Your Apologies

Let’s face it, you’re going to screw up at one point or another, so why not do the smart thing and bank your apology now?

For example: You’ve booked a man-date with the lads to watch the footy before realising that you’ve also already been booked to visit the in-laws that weekend. There’s no way you want to visit the in-laws, so if there’s enough time, have some of her favourite flowers sent to her workplace or bring some home and pop them in a vase. And if you’re going to send a message:

Wrong way:

Hey Babe, I’ll be out with the guys this weekend. Hope these flowers make up for the fact that I won’t be visiting your parents instead – besides, your Dad’s a little weird. Mike out!

Correct way:

Hey there, just a little something for always being so awesome, hope you’re having a great day, cya when you get home. Love, Mike

Now when you need to broach the subject of the weekend, there’s more of a chance you’ll get through unscathed. For added effect, buy scented flowers such as Hyacinths or Freesias, and stand next to them as you present your case – how’s she going to say no when all she can smell is the beautiful scent of flowers that her wonderful man sent by surprise!

Warning: before you do this, it’s best to have given flowers, gifts or surprise dinners on other occasions for no reason at all! Otherwise, if you’re the kind of guy who never does this kind of thing, it’s more likely to raise suspicion, she’s gonna know somethings up and the plan might backfire!

All stereotypical joking aside, depending on how big the mistake is, flowers can be a great way to make an apology and it doesn’t need to be extravagant, even a small posy will go a long way if it’s a sincere gesture.
